Movie Mania App
An app to help users purchase movie tickets plus their food and drink at Movie Mania, with the ability to check themselves into the movie and pick up food and drink once they arrive at the theater.
Role: Lead UX Designer
Project Overview
The Problem
Movie Mania customers do not like spending time standing in line during their movie going experience
The Goal
Design an app that allows users to streamline their movie going experience so they can save time and energy
User Research
I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was movie lovers who attend movies at least once per month.
This user group confirmed initial assumptions about Movie Mania customers, and research also revealed that saving time was not the only thing users are interested in. Other user problems included needing help choosing a movie and the ability to plan their movie outing with other users
Pain Points
No Waiting In Line
Movie goers don’t want to wait in long lines at the theater
Movie Selection
Users need ample information to help them choose a movie
Sharing With Others
Movie goers make plans with others and need the ability to easily share informationInfluencer startup interaction design. Paradigm shift research & development partner network iteration lean.
Persona: Gary
Problem Statement
Gary and his family enjoy monthly movie nights, and he finds the ticketing and concession stand purchase to be overwhelming with two small children in tow, so he needs a way to make the process easier
User journey map
Mapping Gary’s user journey revealed how helpful it would be if we streamlined the movie process through a Movie Mania app.
Digital Wireframes
In the initial design phase, I made sure to base screen designs on feedback and findings from the user research. The goal was to have users be able to get everything completed before even leaving their house
Using the completed set of digital wireframes, I created a low-fidelity prototype. The primary user flow I connected was selecting a movie, choosing seats, and ordering food, so the prototype could be used in a usability study.
Usability Study Findings
I conducted one usability study. Findings from the study helped guide the designs from wireframes to a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.
Users want help making a movie selection
The user flow and navigation is confusing
User were unsure of what happens when they order their food through the app
Updated Mockups
The final high-fidelity prototype presented cleaner user flows for selecting a movie, day & time, seats, and food & drink. It also clarify to the user, how ordering and picking up their food at the concession stand works
Takeaway
Impact
The app helps streamline the entire movie process for users
Next Steps
Work on P1 & P2 insights gathered from our usability study
Conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed.
Conduct more user research to determine any new areas of need.
