Musician Networking App
The user flow for a musician networking app that integrates with Instagram, helping musicians to connect with one another
Role: Lead UX Designer
Project Overview
The Problem
Musicians need an easier and more effective way to network with one another, so they can book more paid gigs
The Goal
To create an app that integrates with Instagram, which is where most musicians currently connect with one another, and provide users with more options to make networking easier
User Research
I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. In my initial research I discovered that musicians currently use Instagram to connect with one another. I used this basis to form my ideas for what kind of app to create.
Pain Points
Not enough paid gigs
Musicians reported not being happy with the amount of paid gigs they’re currently booking
Displaying their skills
Musicians reported their number one priority when connecting with other musicians, is the ability to showcase their talent in order to book more paid gigs
Promoting their work
Musicians reported they want more opportunities to promote their work, to get noticed by other musicians
Persona: Haley
Problem Statement
Haley is a young musicians who needs to network and meet other musicians because she is having trouble booking enough paid gigs to support herself financially
User journey map
Mapping Haley’s user journey highlighted how helpful it would be to create an app that helps with staying connected with muscians you meet at events
Digital Wireframes
In the initial design phase, I wanted to create a way to combine IG, the platform that musicians use the most, with our platform
Using the completed set of digital wireframes, I created a low-fidelity prototype. The primary user flow I connected was selecting a movie, choosing seats, and ordering food, so the prototype could be used in a usability study.
Usability Study Findings
I conducted one usability study. Findings from the study helped guide the designs from wireframes to a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.
Users had trouble understanding what steps to take next
Users weren’t able to go backwards in the process
Users wanted to see what their profile would look like
Updated Mockups
The final high-fidelity prototype created an easier way to see the progress and instructions
Takeaway
Impact
This user flow will help musicians better connect and showcase their talent
Next Steps
Work on P1 & P2 insights gathered from our usability study
Conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed.
Conduct more user research to determine any new areas of need.
